BEST PORTABLE COMMODES

Portable commodes are often called “3 in 1 commodes” because they can be used anywhere in your house such as near a bed or chair, over top of an existing toilet like a safety frame, and in a shower as a shower chair.  There are a few things to consider when purchasing a bedside commode.

Weight capacity

• Most commodes will hold up to 350lbs (159kgs). 
• Get a heavy duty chair if you need more support.

Size

• Commodes vary in width.
• Round seated commodes will fit over standard round toilets and elongated toilets.
• Elongated seated commodes fit over elongated toilets and sometimes over rounded toilets.
• If for use over an existing toilet make sure you measure for fit between the other obstacles like sinks and walls.
• Often the back support bar is removable so it can fit over a toilet without hitting the water tank.
• The diameter of the cut out on the seat is also important so that you can comfortably sit to relieve yourself.
• Also, make sure the commode fits your personal width as you do not want to be squeezed between the arm rests.

Drop arm

• A  “drop arm” means the arm rests can fold down out of the way.
• Useful for people moving from one sitting surface (bed, wheelchair, etc.) to the commode and back again.
• You can sit pivot or slide over with a transfer board and not have to actually stand up.
